ADM-AEOLUS - ESA's Wind Mission

The Guarniero models is used in this illustration.

The mission
The Earth Explorer Atmospheric Dynamics Mission (ADM-Aeolus) will provide global observations of wind profiles from space to improve the quality of weather forecasts, and to advance our understanding of atmospheric dynamics and climate processes.

ADM-Aeolus will utilise the active Doppler Wind Lidars method. This is the only method that has the potential to provide the required data globally, from direct wind observations. In addition, a DWL will provide information on cloud top heights, vertical distribution of cloud, aerosol properties, and wind variability. This information is a useful by-product of the DWL method.

An improved model of the Earth’s climate and atmosphere will lead to progress in numerical weather prediction, especially concerning long-term forecasting. The provision of detailed wind profiles will also benefit scientists involved with climate research, allowing for greater accuracy in the numerical modelling of tropical regions in particular.

Configuration
AEOLUS has a mass of 1100 kg, consisting of the platform 650 kg (plus 116-266 kg propellant and a 450 kg payload. Its dimensions: height 4.6 m, length 1.9 m, width 2.0m. The payload is compiled of a Laser called ALADIN, a transmitter and a receiver.

Atelier Guarniero creates high quality space models, many of which are part of the ESA space program and of the International Space Station (ISS). Each scale model is made exactly matching the real spacecraft using information provided by the European space agency. At the moment we are working on a new line of rocket models beginning with the Soyuz launcher. We are planning to create a full line of rockets to complement our collection of satellites. Make sure to check back often to see pictures of every new satellite we produce.
