The
Meteosat Second Generation Programme
The Meteosat satellite system has been operated
successfully since 1977 providing almost continuous
images and other services to the national Meteorological
Services of EUMETSAT and ESA Member States.
Meteosat has also served operational and research
users throughout West and East Europe and Africa,
with many other users in North and South America,
the Middle East and even in the Arctic and Antarctic
areas. However, the definition of the requirements
and the performance of the system dates back
to technology of the early seventies and given
the advances in operational meteorology and
technology, there is a recognised operational
user requirement for an enhanced system starting
operations by end 2002/early 2003, before the
end of the first operational system.
The
MSG
System
The MSG system consists of a space segment and
a ground segment. It is designed to provide
data, products and services over a system lifetime
of, at least, 12 years, based on a series of
three satellites called MSG-1, -2 and -3. The
launch of the first satellite, MSG-1, is planned
mid 2002.
The MSG system will perform regular operations
with one satellite at the nominal location at
0 degrees longitude over the equator, and foresees
a stand-by satellite that would be
used in case of emergencies or during major
configuration changes.
Below
there is an assortment of our MSG models, two
tablemodels and a paperweight. Our larger models
can be found here.
